Why do we call our language English? We do not speak English. We speak a derivative of the English language but not the language itself. Many try to off set this by calling it the American English... but there is a problem there also. We are United States citizens living on the continent of America. To call ourselves Americans, then Mexicans are Americans, Canadians are Americans, etc.... So we are speaking another countries language and we are calling ourselves citizens of two land masses that are occupied by various countries that we claim are not apart of our nation, am I the only one confused by this? OK, so here is what I propose... we no longer call our language English... we call it Urbanian, there is a Urban dictionary after all that is filled with the slang terms that are commonly used in our language now anyway. We no longer call ourselves Americans. We call ourselves USers.... yes I know that spells USERS but that is pretty much the basis of our governmental system anyway. So all those on board... Say I, all those opposed... shut up!

I will not say shut up. People are entitled to express their opinions. I will say disagree, to a degree. English is the root language the overwhelming majority of people living in this country. The fact that it is a modified version of the root language does not negate calling it English. Latin and Italian are related, but by far enough that they have become separate languages.
The reason it is sometimes called American English is because the modifications occurred on the American Continent. All three sections of it. Canada, the United States of America, and Mexico. American English is not exclusive to the United States. It is only one language spoken here of many. Those speaking French here have modified it extensively in places and it turned it into two or three other languages, or variations. And the urban slang is simply a variation and addition to an existing language, not a new language.
You are right about the population names. Mexicans, Canadians, and citizens of the US are all Americans. No reason those in the US should not call themselves Americans. The fact that many Mexicans and Canadians prefer to use those terms rather than the broader term does not mean US citizens must do the same. It is a matter of choice.
Just my respectful alternative opinion.

OK OK, that was a little over the top and childish. You are right Obiwan... everyone does have a right to their own opinions. You have to admit though that our language had deviated so much from the "mother" tongue that it has become a individual language of its own. Just the other day I was having some translation issues between myself and a British gentlemen. It turns out that there are either words that we have changed their meaning of here or that we have created that are unknown to other English speaking countries. I just think it is time that we identify with the fact that our language is no longer the "English" language and should have its own identification.
